1 Product, 10 Ideas: Idea 6 – Character Trait Flowers Build self-esteem and self-awareness by having students create character trait flowers. In the center, write “I am” and then use the petals to write character traits. Students can put their names on the leaf (if there is one). Display the flowers on a bulletin board or window as part of your spring classroom decor. We took the Poppin’ Patterns Spring Flower 6-inch Designer Cutouts and came up with 10 different ways that you could use them in the classroom. With spring just around the corner, and a week full of parent-teacher conferences- this will be perfect to do with my kids at the end of the week. Its important to remember whats special and important about each one of them; a lot of times I feel like they don’t get that attention at home so allowing them to shine in the classroom is super important to me as their teacher!

This is such a cute idea! I have been looking for ways to build my students self esteem. Modification idea: Let students create petals for each other, instead of “I am” you could do “John is…” with words around the side that their peers wrote for them. It really makes them think in the positive, and kids can see how special they are to one another!

What a great idea! You could also use these for describing character traits for characters in books.

These will go right along with our unit on character traits. My first graders look for character traits in the books we read, so having them turn around and describe their own character traits would be a nice tie-in to our social skills lessons.

This would be great with our S.S. unit for citizenship. We have students write “responsibility” in the center of a worksheet flower and then write various ways they are responsible in each petal. This would be so much more colorful and uniform instead of students cutting out their flower.

I’ve seen this done with classmates writing adjectives about each other to help 1)build self esteem and 2)think positively about each other. I really like the bright colors of the shapes too!

What a great way to build self-confidence, self-awareness, and learn some character trait words! Great idea and perfect for spring!

We have been spending a lot of time discussing attributes of objects as part of our math curriculum. This activity will serve as a wonderful way to help my students begin to see that character traits are also a type of “attribute” as they help you describe a person by their behavior! Can’t wait to try it out!!

A great idea! Could also have other students write descriptors for their classmates about the strengths they see in their peers. Makes a nice, colorful spring display as well!

This sounds like a wonderful project for my class. I think I will start it tomorrow so it will be up for parent conferences on Thursday! They could use a good boost using their report cards as incentive as to their accomplishments. Thanks for the great spring idea!

Some of my favorite posts are when people share ideas for a product. I get caught up in using something one way, and then I see others ideas, and have a whole new outlook for extending its use. I am often able to apply those ideas to another product as well. Thanks!

Our school is active in PBS (Positive Behavior System) and I am using this flower idea to reinforce this month’s character trait. Instead of making a poster to be displayed, we used the flower design to put the character trait in the middle (responsibility) and then put synonyms on each petal. This also reinforced our writing skill for vocabulary (so we got two lessons in one!)

We did something very similar to this a few weeks ago. Only each person had a flower on their desk that the other students came by to write on. Their directions were to write their favorite character trait for that person, thus it had to be positive. This was a great way to combat bullying and encourage a classroom community! (Not to mention teaching them about character traits!)

My students have a hard time accepting what is different about them or others. This is a great way for students to display what makes them unique! Could also have the other students write about that student.

I love the idea to use the leaves and flowers to make a ” I am” flower. Super idea for beginning of school year….

I love this idea. This is a great tool to get students discussing character traits instead of just saying the character is good or nice.
