Focusing on Reading Is E.Z.C.™
|
Recently, the Washington Post featured Really Good Stuff’s E.Z.C. Highlighter Tape® in an article by professional organizer Jackie Kelley. Kelley points out that for teens, the highlighter tape is a perfect alternative to using a highlighter in textbooks that must be turned back in. Like all Really Good Stuff products, the E.Z.C.® products are designed and tested by teachers for teachers. If you have not seen them, take a look below and hear from a Really Good Teacher how he is using them in his classroom.
Designed to highlight two rows of text, these strips are also perfect for picture books with larger fonts. Help even the youngest readers focus on the text at hand. With a choice of blue, yellow, or pink, you can select the color that will help focus and motivate your students the most.
For those students who only need one line of text highlight, the E.Z.C. Readers® are ideal. Each sturdy E.Z.C. Reader® is fitted with a transparent plastic edge that acts as a moveable highlighter that rivets the reader’s attention. Reading becomes a fun, focused activity!
Encourage readers to highlight their books as they read them without leaving a mark in the book. The E.Z.C. Highlighter Tape™ lets students focus their attention on the points that they want to remember when reviewing. Are your students too young to really review? Try the idea below instead!
Do not think we have forgotten about math! This E.Z.C. Ruler™ is designed to highlight fractions and help your students succeed at identifying parts of a whole. Make the product do double-duty by having students use it to track their reading with the yellow highlight strip.
No matter which E.Z.C. product you choose, it is sure to help your students stay focused and on task.

The highlighting tape is helpful for peer “editing” for the six traits: yellow for ideas (excellent/fall flat), pink for voice (authentic/forced), etc. Kids are more likely to focus on the actual reading of the text when using the tapes.

I love these strips. I own a learning resources store in Honduras, and one day as I was enthusiastically showing a parent the EZC strips, she was so happy…she said the therapist had recommended these for her kid, and she had looked all over different stores in the U.S. and here and not until that moment she found them. I was so glad to know we were able to offer these to her. I am very glad every time i find a product like this that helps kids learn in simple ways.

Just thinking how much easier it is to use the EZC strips to mark books that are often used for the students who need this as a modification. Books are often used year after year and sometimes get mixed in with the un-highlighted ones. Having the strips would allow them to be removed when finished and accommodate numbers accordingly in the classes each year.

As a veteran educator, I have been using the E-Z-C Reader for quite some time. It has so many wonderful applications in the classroom. Not only do I use it to help my 2nd Grade readers to develop greater fluency, but I also have my readers use it to find and identify words in their text related to a particular concept (ex: compound words, words with a particular suffix, etc.). It is extremely helpful to my learning disabled readers who have difficulty keeping their place as they read. The E-Z-C Reader is one of several special tools that I place in a gift bag (Known as a “Success Bag”) that I give all of my students on the first day of school

I love the EZ readers and the highlighter tape. I have used these for several years with my struggling readers to help them keep their place and improve fluency on longer passages. I started using them with the low kids then transferred them into using their fingers as guides. I loved the way these kids were reminding the higher students “use your finger like the highlighter bookmark shows you” This gave the lower readers confidence when they showed the higher readers a new “trick to help you read.”

I love the highlighter tape. As part of our districts guided reading plan, we preview challenging vocabulary before the kiddos begin reading. Using highlighter tape, I have students “hunt” for the words when reading independently. That way I know they were listening to my shpeel beforehand

The ruler would be a great math tool! I haven’t seen that before. Love all the ideas about the highlighting tape.

I like to use the highlighter tape in big books to highlight high frequency words.

I had no idea that there was EZreader tape!!! What a fantastic idea. I know my college son who rents his books will love that. I have used colored celephane in the past with my first graders so that they can focus. I know that the EZreaders are out there, I just haven’t been able to afford to get enough for everyone every year. I will try the tape though. Thanks for the heads up!!!

Would just love to try this product, currently cut up yellow transparency paper and nuggle it between card stock! Does anyone know an average price range, and where to buy?

I use the E.Z.C. readers with my struggling first grade group. They love them!

I am interested in the tape but after clicking on the link to view the product info I was discouraged to find no real data. How many feet per roll? Can you reposition the tape or remove it if the student covers an incorrect word or phrase?

These look really fun!! I’d love to use them in my classroom!!

Ok…tried to post, but it didn’t go, so here it is again. Sorry if it is a repeat. I have heard of your reading cards, but I didn’t know about the tape. My college son will love it since he rents his text books and he can’t hilite them. I have always wanted to use the cards, but couldn’t afford them these past few years. I am hoping to get them soon. Great product and great ideas!!!

The E.Z.C. tape looks really cool and would be helpful for any grade level. I really want to try out the highlighting tape since it doesn’t leave marks.

Highlight tape and easy readers can also be useful for students with visual difficulties.

I have been looking into these products for a while now. I guess I might have to give them a try after reading all of the great reviews.

I love the EZ readers. My students use them at the teacher table!! They help the students keep up when reading!! Great Idea!!!

I love using the E.Z.C. Readers! I had several students last year (in 3rd grade) that could not stay focused or read fluently without using them. So many of the students love them that even the ones who didn’t “need” them used them. It helped the students who needed it without making them feel “wierd” about using a tool to help them! Definitely plan on using them again this year in first grade!

I have used these in my classroom and they are excellent! They really help motivate and focus students on the text. This improves their comprehension as well!

i have students highlight answers to comprehension questions on worksheets. With the highlighting tape, I could even have them highlight the answers in novels.

These would be great to help my beginning readers learn to read. I would love to win something!

I love to use highlighter tape to have students locate the “right there” answers in all subjects. I have students keep strips of the tape on the back of a laminated bookmark for quick access.

I will begin student teaching in a few weeks and am looking forward to checking this product out and using it in my classroom very soon!!

I love the highlight tape! I use it so my struggling readers can identify word parts and rhymes. I also love the readers as well. They really help students focus on what they are reading and help with the return sweep that so many have trouble with.
Commented On August 15th, 2011 9:26 pm
I am excited to try the EZC Strips return sweep. I’ve used the EZC readers in the past but a lot of my students would have a hard time tracking to the next line without stopping what they were reading. Being able to see two lines of text will not only help with their tracking, but allow them to build fluency as well!

I love the readers and use the highlighters tape all the time for sight word searching. I hope to win a set that would help my first graders this year!!
Commented On August 15th, 2011 9:30 pm
I’ve always wanted to try something like this. In the past we’ve just used our “reading fingers” or popsicle sticks to follow along but I believe the students would be more interested in something like this. =)

I plan on using these with my Special Ed students this year!

I have used a different variety of highlighter tape with my kindergartners. It is very helpful for kids who are just beginning to read and have trouble focusing on the tape. I also found it helpful for pointing out sight words, vocab words, etcetera. Thanks for posting this!

My students love these! I keep them in cup on my desk and l let the students take one if want it. Once one student takes one the others want to “try it out”. It’s amazing how something so simple can make such a difference in a child’s reading.

I love these! They work well in my inclusion classroom. Such a great way to differentiate learning!!

I love the ideas in this article. I have never had the opportunity to use these products, but I would love the opportunity to do so. I try to get my students to follow the workds with their fingers, but they don’t always do it. I have four year old twins at home that I am teaching to read and would also love these to use with them. Thanks for the great ideas.

EZC tape works great for guided and independent reading. My fourth graders loved using the tape to highlight the main idea sentence in non-fiction books. It is great for finding cause and effect, sequence words, etc.

I use the E.Z.C. tape with shared reading texts – it really helps my ELL students and my SEN students focus on key vocabulary. I use the readers with SEN students, as well as general ed. struggling students, in guided reading groups. Love both products!

I used EZC reader when I taught first grade. Never thought about it once I moved up. Love the idea of using the highlight tape for some of my 5th graders!

I love the idea of using this tape to detect rhyming words! What a great reading tool:)

I use the EZC hilighting tape in my BIG BOOKS at words I want my students to focus on. I also use it when I want students to find certain words in a BIG BOOK or in their guided reading books. The new EZC Sweepers are awesome and would be a fabulous addition to guided reading. These would be a fabulous addition to my ESL first grade class. =)

A teacher in my school has a really great idea for using the E.Z.C. Highlighter Tape. She lets students use it to highlight the standards being taught each week. Since ALL the standards for each subject for the entire year are posted in the classroom, this has been very helpful to the students.

I love these! I have used them for several years and they work so well. Students are amazed at how much they help them focus on exactly what they are supposed to be reading.

As a high school teacher, I love the idea of removable highlighter tape. Some students feel the need to highlight everything when looking for important information in content texts like science books. You could use the highlighter tape to help students learn what’s important for notetaking. They could highlight what they choose, then pair with a friend and make adjustments, and then check in with the teacher’s noteS to help develop note taking skills.

I love ez readers! I used them in my thrid grade classroom and now in first grade. I am excited to see the return sweep! Many first grades refuse to use their fingers to track the text. When they get to the end of the line they usually skip a line. Excited to see if this works! Just have to wait for my next pay-day. : (

I love the EZC Readers! My struggling first graders think they are fun to use, and not only that…it helps them stay on track!

I love the EZ readers. I use them with my second graders during small group reading. It is an easy way to help them keep on track, but it is helpful to the teacher to make sure they are paying attention. In reading the article, I like the idea of using the highlighting tape during group time for word and sound hunt. I will use that idea this year.

I love using highlighter tape in so many ways! It is great for helping students to recognize and find rhyming words; to help with decoding by finding word chunks, blends, diagraphs, etc. It is a great tool for idependent learning centers too. I give them a few words from a Dolch list and have them highlight every word that they can find.

I have used a similar product (because I cannot yet afford the R.G.S. kind) for several years now. It works wonders on all ages! I have used it for Pre-K through 2nd grade kiddos. I love the concept and cannot wait to have the REAL version!! Saving my pennies!!

I have used the EZC strips and they are awesome! They have really helped me keep one of my students on track with her reading as she is easily distractable. The color strip (especially yellow) helps those with sensory disorders.

I am always amazed at the new products that come out that are so obvious and so simple and yet, no one has thought of them until now. I love the highlighter tape for use in text and reference books that are a part of a class set. Students can highlight words or passages while working on a project and then easily remove when done. What great products for beginning and struggling readers too!

I use highlighter tape in my reading program all the time. When using the document camera, I highlight trouble words or important vocabulary words I want to review. I also mark the section, in their book, that the student can practice and read to the group. I love highlighter tape.

I like to use highlighting tape to let the kids tape words they don’t know. Once they get through a book, they make their own flash cards to take home to study missed words! The tape keeps them positive about words they don’t know, but the flash cards keep them from overusing the tape!
Commented On August 15th, 2011 11:36 pm
Love these! So helpful with beginning readers as they learn to read longer passages, especially helps those who have a difficult time tracking.
Commented On August 15th, 2011 11:36 pm
I used the highlighting tape very much when teaching reading. Many of my students had a difficult time reading the endings of words,…They would read the first part and guess on the last part. With the highlighting tape I would highlight the endings and this forced them to completely read the words. This strategy worked very well with my students:)
