A Lock on Learning

Idea by Christine, a 4th Grade Teacher, from Joliet, IL.

In our district, Middle School students must begin to switch classes. As part of switching classes, students must master the dreaded locker combination padlock. My students will enter Middle School next year and many of them indeed express anxiety over the idea of having to manipulate such a padlock quickly between classes. To alleviate their concerns, we offer students several different combination padlocks on which they can practice. This gives our students an opportunity to exercise a bit of mental math while also getting them comfortable with using padlocks.
