February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and what better time to create some toothpaste in the classroom. This easy science experiment is perfect for preschool and lower elementary grades. It promotes dental health awareness while also getting students excited and thinking about science.
Toothpaste Science Experiment for Kids
Critical Question: How can toothpaste be made in the classroom from common ingredients?
Supplies Needed (per pair of students):
- 2 teaspoons powdered calcium carbonate (ground chalk)
- 1 small restaurant-size package of sugar substitute
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 3-4 drops of peppermint or vanilla extract
- 1 plastic spoon
- 1 small plastic cup
- Water
Procedure:
- Mix dry ingredients together in the cup.
- Add extract.
- Add water, one drop at a time, until a paste forms. Be careful not to add too much.
- Practice brushing teeth or put in small, snack-size baggies to take home.
