Solution Sunday: Sight Word Practice and Mastery
|
The Problem: Mastering sight words is a critical skill that students must learn. These foundational words are what will help them become better readers, better writers, and better students overall. You have tried to post sight words around the room, even those below grade level, to help your students learn and remember them. Flash cards go home weekly, easy readers are a nightly staple, and daily practice is something you believe in. For some students though, the sight words are giving them an exceptionally hard time. How can you reinforce the sight words anymore than you already have? Never fear! Really Good Stuff Solutions is here!
The Solution: All students can benefit from extra sight word practice and when it is made into fun practice, it is even more enthusiastically received. We listened to teachers who asked for more sight word reinforcement products and created the Sight Words Bracelet Set just for you. You can purchase the different sets individually from the Primer level to Third Grade or you can get all levels to help reinforce common words and let students master them with success.
Each bracelet is printed with 8 to 10 grade-level Dolch sight words that students need to know. Each grade-level set comes with 12 to 15 bracelets depending on the number of words featured in each grade. The complete set includes all four grade-levels so that your students can advance and practice as quickly or as slowly as needed.
Your students who need a lot of repetition, like your dyslexic and struggling readers, will really benefit from having the words constantly in their line of sight. When they have mastered all of the words on their current bracelet, move them up to the next one. English language learners will also benefit from the hands-on manipulative that will give them the language they need to succeed.
How do you encourage your students to practice their sight words? Share your ideas!

As a collaborative classroom teacher this would be a wonderful tool, and a break from the sight word flash cards!

I found really big and wide brightly colored rubber bands that I use in my classroom for “speaking Spanish”. They would be perfect to try this idea with, until I win, or break down and buy, my own set

These would be AWESOME for my kids! Unfortunately, with trying to keep up with common core for the first year, our reading time has been cut
My kids are not as strong with sight words as kids in the past…I need as many ideas as I can get!!

How about some reward bracelets for having learned multiplication tables? Or, for learning, would a set of facts fit on a bracelet? I teach 4th grade and they struggle so much with their basic facts.

These look great and I would love to use them especially with my struggling readers. I do have a technical question. What are the bands made out of. Are they silicone or rubber? I have a student with a latex allergy.
