I agree that teachers should start the year on a positive note. I start by giving parents a business card size magnet with my contact information. In one corner it reads “Hand in hand, together we can.” I want parents to know we are all working together. I also request all families complete a basic form about their child. These are placed on every desk for Open House. Our Open House is the night before school begins. It asks questions like, “What are your child’s strengths?” “What concerns does your child have about this year?” “What are your concerns about this year?” It has other basic questions, but those open the door for discussion or follow up phone calls if needed. Communication is key, and I also try to think of how I would like to be approached if there were issues with my child.
