I will organize by topic and series in 2nd. Also a bit by level. #teachchat -9:18 PM Jun 13th, 2012 ReallyGoodStuff Do you think it’s important to stick to one type of organization or can you have a little bit of genre, some themes, etc? #TeachChat -9:17 PM Jun 13th, 2012 JessicaSiedman For the most part, of course there are those kiddos that don’t branch out of their typical genre #teachchat -9:16 PM Jun 13th, 2012 ReallyGoodStuff Having a “Theme” basket is a great way to connect to a unit you’re studying! I have been a middle school language arts teacher, and my library has always been alphabetized by author’s last name. I am now moving to 4th grade and want to sort my books by theme and/or genre but don’t know if I will have the space. I have 7 bookshelves full of books, and they are packed pretty tight. I need some suggestions on baskets, bins, labeling, etc.

I plan on using (for myself and coworkers) the free app from Booksource (http://classroom.booksource.com/) which will scan and organize my books…..Now to only find the time to do it!

This last school year was my first year teaching. I organized my library with the book baskets from Really Good Stuff. The library pack that I bought came with tags to label the baskets. As soon as I had my room outfitted with these awesome baskets, the library became less of a hassle and mess. I also put stickers inside all of my books that I purchased myself. It made it easier to pack up my books at the end of the year and leave behind those that came with the classroom.

Thank you for posting the transcript. I was unable to participate in the chat last night. I loved to see that other teachers are facing the same struggles. I organized my library by subjects- science, social studies, math, but they did not all fit neatly into a category that way, so others were sorted by series, author, and genres. I ordered Really Good Stuff baskets the year before last and those allowed me to store more books on the shelves. They also help students return books to the proper place. I have stickers on some of my books that show grade level. This has been a daunting task as I “inherited” a retired teacher’s library. I am grateful, but I think there are thousands of books. Any tips to make this easier or faster? Thank you!
