vmontgomery48 @ReallyGoodStuff for them to be able to write their thoughts down without anyone judging their thoughts. Responsibility. #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat @ReallyGoodStuff Thanks!
ryflinn #TeachChat I loved tonights chat! Thank you for helping mr be a better educator everyone!
MrsStanford724 RT @ReallyGoodStuff: You win! RT @msjones0507 I want them to get writing exposure through journals and a possible topic for later editing… #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @ryflinn: #TeachChat I love hearing my students voices coming to life on paper! #TeachChat
solissa thanks I made it late…meetings school day… #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @msjones0507: #TeachChat I also use it to monitor my students socio-emotional well being. #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff You win! RT @msjones0507 I want them to get writing exposure through journals and a possible topic for later editing… #TeachChat
ktyndal @msjones0507 You could transcribe things for younger kids. I’m not sure if it still has the same impact but you could try! #TeachChat
ryflinn #TeachChat I love hearing my students voices coming to life on paper!
msjones0507 #TeachChat I also use it to monitor my students socio-emotional well being.
AnIowaTeacher As we move from Edmodo journaling to blogging, my goal is to continue to push my students to create more writing, period! #teachchat
msjones0507 #TeachChat I want them to get writing exposure through journals and a possible topic for later editing…
awilder60 I want them to be comfortable writing and not see it as such an obstacle. I want them to see their progresseion through the year #TeachChat
DCraig42 @ReallyGoodStuff We don’t do much prompt writing, kids create seed ideas and build on those. More authentic #teachchat
vmontgomery48 @ReallyGoodStuff When you describe the dream, include as many details as possible. #TeachChat
ktyndal I want students to learn to love to write and be able to express themselves. #TeachChat
solissa to pay attention to their writing as they write it #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff @solissa Nice to see you!!! =) #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat @ReallyGoodStuff I love the dream journal! My inner city students need to keep their eyes on long term goals!
ryflinn #TeachChat here is a photo gallery of my kinder kids sharing writing from day one on doc camera greenlocalschools.org/Page/4829
RSaints #teachchat Here’s a new Common Core walk thru app for principals, teachers, and parents. itunes.apple.com/us/app/common-…
ReallyGoodStuff Q5 (last for tonight):What is your goal for students in terms of journal writing? What do you want them to achieve? A3 wins! #TeachChat
solissa I have a monthly journal going for my 3rd grade w/story starters..If I were a turkey at thanksgiving I would… #teachchat
DCraig42 #teachchat all the wonderful sharing on Twitter goes to my Diigo resources and then filtered to class site if useful for kids directly.
ReallyGoodStuff It encourages them to think about how their choices will either help them achieve those dreams/goals or hold them back #TeachChat
DCraig42 #teachchat nylearns.org/dcraig is my classroom webpage of resources that my students and former students love to frequent even from home.
ReallyGoodStuff One more journal use I’d suggest is to have students create a dream journal. What are their goals/plans/dreams for the future? #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @ktyndal: Sometimes on things like daily oral language I make mistakes on purpose just to show it happens to all of us! #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff I’d say upper elem/ms/hs RT @awilder60: @ReallyGoodStuff What ages would you use elmodo with? #TeachChat
awilder60 @ReallyGoodStuff I’ll have to check it out! You learn a lot about your students when you journal with them! #TeachChat
AnIowaTeacher My fifth graders use Edmodo, and I know of classrooms down to third grade using it. #edmodo is a great hashtag to check out!
ktyndal u can also use things like Google Docs and students can collaborate on writing assignments at the same time; perfect for projects #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff @AnIowaTeacher Excellent! I love that! Very positive focus and “safe” for students to share. #TeachChat
DCraig42 #teachchat nice thing about tech is you can often tell how engaged kids are at home too. Parents enjoy the tools too #teachchat
ktyndal Sometimes on things like daily oral language I make mistakes on purpose just to show it happens to all of us! #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff It’s edmodo .com Sorry, twitter shrank (?) it! lol RT @awilder60: @ReallyGoodStuff What is elmodo? #TeachChat
awilder60 @ReallyGoodStuff What ages would you use elmodo with? #TeachChat
ktyndal @msjones0507 how early childhood? obviously students would be able to need to know how to type… #TeachChat
AnIowaTeacher @ReallyGoodStuff We talk about “good mistakes” as for criticism, how we all make mistakes and how we all can learn from them. #teachchat
ktyndal @awilder60 sometimes that’s what motivates them to want to write, the hope that someone will connect or write back too #TeachChat
DCraig42 @ktyndal absolutely, extends learning outside the classroom, that is what we want #teachchat
msjones0507 #TeachChat I’ve never used kidblog….appropriate for early childhood?
ReallyGoodStuff edmodo.com it’s a social networking site for teachers&students RT @awilder60: @ReallyGoodStuff What is elmodo? #TeachChat
awilder60 @ktyndal I like when they can do things independently at home too #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff @ryflinn Peer encouragement is a great motivator, but how do they handle criticism? #TeachChat
NSchoolSupply RT @ktyndal: love kidblog and so do my students! #TeachChat
awilder60 @ReallyGoodStuff What is elmodo? #TeachChat
ktyndal @DCraig42 Things like Kidblog can provide an opportunity to engage students at home too. #TeachChat
ryflinn #TeachChat that’s why I also love the doc camera because the other kids say what they did well in their writing like good spacing…etc..
BarbBlackburn grows&glows is effective, simple, works with all ages, & is very positive. works for peer feedback! need 2 see if son doing hw.#teachchat
awilder60 @BarbBlackburn Thanks for all the ideas #TeachChat
DCraig42 @BarbBlackburn both are important but tech is often left out due to time commitment. I love infusing it despite the struggle #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @ryflinn we have a picture checklist&my studs just check box if they have picture, capital, ending mark, magic lines, and spaces #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff @BarbBlackburn Stay safe in all the yucky weather tonight/tomorrow! =) #TeachChat
awilder60 @BarbBlackburn I like that illustration for kids…they can visualize it themselves #TeachChat
ryflinn #TeachChat we have a picture checklist and my studs just check the box if they have picture, capital, ending mark, magic lines, and spaces
ReallyGoodStuff You’ve been wonderful!RT @BarbBlackburn: have to sign off now, thanks for letting me participate! Love PLNs. rigorineducation.blogspot.com #TeachChat
ktyndal @DCraig42 My students love kidblog the most when I comment on their posts. They feel heard and valued. #TeachChat
saraallen91 @DCraig42 “Deficient” is an incredibly harsh & degrading way to describe stdnt writers. They are still learning—just like us. #teachchat
awilder60 @BarbBlackburn Yup, definitely think it would work with some parents and not others. #TeachChat
BarbBlackburn have to sign off now, thanks for letting me participate! Love PLNs. rigorineducation.blogspot.com #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @DCraig42 want to use other tools like Storybird,Edmodo but time is my biggest obstacle when working with deficient writers. #TeachChat
msjones0507 “@BarbBlackburn: ask them, what glows in your entry, what needs some watering to grow? #teachchat” I like this analogy!
ktyndal you can really see the difference when you have the high writers vs. low in terms of quantity of output and quality #TeachChat
DCraig42 #teachchat it creates excitement w writing though and paper and pencil writing can’t duplicate. How often as an adult do you write in pen?
BarbBlackburn ask them, what glows in your entry, what needs some watering to grow? #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff You win! =) RT @awilder60: @ReallyGoodStuff Have a rubric after each entry that students can check #TeachChat
DCraig42 #teachchat want to use other tools as well like Storybird, Edmodo but again time is my biggest obstacle when working with deficient writers.
awilder60 @ReallyGoodStuff Have a rubric after each entry that students can check #TeachChat
ryflinn #TeachChat Do a Science experiment like and they draw and write how it worked
ReallyGoodStuff RT @ryflinn My studs this year r really into Science Journal. we’ll explore something in sensory table and then record in journal #TeachChat
ktyndal You can have students reflect on an assignment in journals. #TeachChat
BarbBlackburn @awilder60 That’s why need caution, know parents, build rel first. Nothing works perfectly w/everyone!adapt 2 ur needs.#teachchat
ktyndal @DCraig42 I use it with my high RTI group too (kidblog) #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff Q4: How could you incorporate self-assessment with journaling? A3 wins! #TeachChat
BarbBlackburn could adapt to content 2RT @msjones0507: #TeachChat beg capital gets head, spaces get body, punc gets legs, invspelling gets arms, etc
ryflinn #TeachChat My studs this year are really into their Science Journal we’ll explore something in sensory table and then record in journal
DCraig42 #teachchat I add kidblog to our very structured Lit Framework. Use as a reading response option for kids and for sharing learning w others
awilder60 @BarbBlackburn I can actually think of some parents that I work with that would have difficulty with 3 way journals #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @BarbBlackburn 3 way journals can be very positive (careful about those parents who wont/cant so kids dont feel like outcast) #TeachChat
vmontgomery48 @ReallyGoodStuff If sharing with the parent is going to help the student then I believe it will be helpful for all. #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff @msjones0507 I’d love to actually see that! #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat In K I’ve only used the journals with parents during conferences…
ktyndal @msjones0507 love the hangman idea! #TeachChat
awilder60 @ReallyGoodStuff No, but it sounds like a good idea #TeachChat
BarbBlackburn 3 way journals can be very positive (careful about those parents who won’t/cant so kids don’t feel like outcast)#teachchat
ktyndal I check daily journals just for completion once a week to keep them honest. #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @ktyndal: love kidblog and so do my students! #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat …beginning capital gets a head, spaces get a body, punctuation gets legs, inventive spelling gets arms, etc… Kids love it!
daycogs @ReallyGoodStuff 1X a month I read through and repsond via letters back to the children..organized by prompts — expository, etc. #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff Do any of you use journals to provide three-way communication between parents/child/teacher? #TeachChat
BarbBlackburn chunking task esp helpful for #ELL and #SPED RT @vmontgomery48: @ReallyGoodStuff Provide due dates for assignments each day. #TEachChat
ktyndal love kidblog and so do my students! #TeachChat
awilder60 @msjones0507 Sounds fun for the kids! #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @DCraig42 @BarbBlackburn never a dull moment though,I make time 4 things that make sense like kidblog #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat A teacher in my building uses a glyph to respond to students. She draws certain parts of a hangman-like figure for conventions…
MrsStanford724 #TeachChat @vmontgomery48 congrats!!!
vmontgomery48 @ReallyGoodStuff Provide due dates for assignments each day. #TEachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @BarbBlackburn Time management-respond to certain #per day rather than all at once.use grows &glows, what glows&what nds grow #TeachChat
DCraig42 @BarbBlackburn never a dull moment though, I make time for things that make sense like kidblog even if I do use it in isolation #teachchat
ReallyGoodStuff You win! RT @vmontgomery48 responding daily or twice a week will let the students know that you are insterested. By the subject. #TeachChat
awilder60 I like to tell kids what they did well in their writing and also to respond to what they wrote with my own thoughts #TeachChat
msjones0507 #TeachChat I try to do 4 every other day for K, and can do at least a couple times a month.
BarbBlackburn Time management–respond to certain #per day rather than all at one time. #teachchat use grows and glows, what glows and what nds grow
MrsStanford724 #TeachChat I respond to each child one day a week. I do about 5 daily and cycle through my students. They love knowing that I read through!
vmontgomery48 @ReallyGoodStuff responding daily or twice a week will let the students know that you are insterested. By the subject. #TeachChat
awilder60 Each week, I respond at the end of their entry #TeachChat
DCraig42 #teachchat I enjoy getting post updates to my phone from a couple kids who absolutely love kidblog all times of the day
ReallyGoodStuff Q3: How often do you respond to students’ journals, if at all? How do you organize it? A3 wins! #TeachChat
ReallyGoodStuff RT @DCraig42 kidblog is a great tool 4 stud. reflect.Wish kids were more self motivated 2 publish better posts, but well get there #TeachChat
ryflinn @MrsStanford724 I like this idea usually helping too much this time of year #teachchat

Wonderful chat, hated missing it. I’ve seen children’s writings take off just through journaling. Some like it and some don’t, but it really helps their writing. I find it works best first thing in the morning as they come in the door or right after recess to quiet them down!
