I miss them (sometimes) #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff RT @saraallen91: Ive been working on a DVD 4 all of them ( w/ videos/pics from the whole schl yr) that well watch on last day #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff Of course their expertise can be in things like morning routine, class library, transitions, etc #TeachChat mr_avery I made DVDs for all students last year of all the videos we made over the course of the year #teachchat frugalteacher @ktyndal I will probably do the same or post the slide show on our blog. #teachchat saraallen91 @frugalteacher I’ve been working on a DVD 4 all of them ( w/ videos/pics from the whole schl yr) that we’ll watch on last day #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff those students are the “experts” for the grade level. RT @lemjames82: I mak cd of pics, too #TeachChat mr_avery @saraallen91 It’s a big change for our students. Go from a K-6 school of 230 students to a middle school of over 300 #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff Another fun idea is to have a school wide “Moving Up Open House Day” where students visit the next grade up & …. #TeachChat ktyndal @frugalteacher @saraallen91 We only show a movie if we did a novel study or went with a particular theme. #TeachChat lemjames82 I mak cd of pics, too #teachchat FredEnde @ReallyGoodStuff Do visits. RT @frugalteacher: spelling bee, math facts bee, geography bee….lots of bees with fun little prizes #TeachChat saraallen91 @mr_avery I like that idea of some collaborative projects. What kind of projects are you doing? #teachchat ktyndal Have kids create a gameboard and create trivia cards that cover knowledge learned throughout the year; then have a game day! #TeachChat frugalteacher mhmmm…RT @ktyndal: a countdown to becoming the next grade level rather than ending this year? Thatd be more positive… #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff It’s also fun to have students work together to make their own review games and switch them during small groups/centers #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff Like it!RT @ktyndal Couldnt it be a countdown 2 becoming the next grade level rather than ending this year?Thatd be more positive #TeachChat mr_avery We have a couple collaborative projects planned so we can connect with other classes around the world #teachchat frugalteacher spelling bee, math facts bee, geography bee….lot’s of bee’s with fun little prizes #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff Jeopardy (based on the subjects you’ve taught & covering a info from the start of the school year), #TeachChat saraallen91 @ReallyGoodStuff The question was a contest? Neat! #teachchat ktyndal Couldn’t it be a countdown to becoming the next grade level rather than ending this year? That’d be more positive… #TeachChat frugalteacher I’m not gonna lie…it’s 24 days and count for me ReallyGoodStuff Other things that you can do to make the end of the year fun AND reinforce what you’ve taught all year are: #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff Boo! =( RT @frugalteacher: the teachers used to put a countdown in our restroom – we had to stop doing that too :-/ #TeachChat ktyndal Love it! RT @ReallyGoodStuff: Heres a great resource for an alphabet countdown: blog.reallygoodstuff.com/?p=9186 #TeachChat ktyndal Our K-1 do math countdowns and to 100 days RT @ReallyGoodStuff: Other countdown ideas… #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff or a Memories from the school year countdown (start back the number of days from the number of students in the class) #TeachChat frugalteacher the teachers used to put a countdown in our restroom – we had to stop doing that too :-/ #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff Other countdown ideas might be just counting up or down (great math skill reinforcement), having a joke-a-day countdown, #TeachChat frugalteacher We don’t countdown because our principal feels that it’s negative. #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff Here’s a great resource for an alphabet countdown: blog.reallygoodstuff.com/?p=9186 #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff You win! Very sweet! RT @saraallen91: I actually dont do any kind of countdown at all for the last day of school. #TeachChat ktyndal Looks fun! RT @MrsMorgansClass: state testing ended today. Thank you!! =) RT @lemjames82: last year I used countdown from really good stuff #TeachChat MrsMorgansClass state testing ended today. Tomorrow we’re doing this: pinterest.com/pin/2739455898… via @Pinterest #teachchat ktyndal We don’t normally do an official countdown; I do haha…but maybe with these cool ideas I will do something. #TeachChat lemjames82 last year I used countdown from really good stuff #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff @ms_willhrzn That’s wonderful! You’re almost there!! =) What grade do you teach? #TeachChat MrsScissons 9:24pm via Twitter for BlackBerry® Jeopardy or family feud games for full class review are always fun #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff Q2: How do you countdown (or do you?) the last days of school? A3 wins! #TeachChat lemjames82 @ReallyGoodStuff good idea I better get started #teachchat ms_willhrzn @ReallyGoodStuff May 22nd is the students last day #TeachChat ktyndal @ReallyGoodStuff re: countdowns, they should make a cool chocolate calendar like they do for Xmas! #TeachChat ReallyGoodStuff for instance, do an activity that begins with each letter of the alphabet for the last 26 days. #TeachChat mr_avery Unfortunate that I feel like I can finally do “fun” projects after state testing. Looking forward to some PBL though! #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff I’m going to throw them out and please feel free to add on!! For countdowns – Use the alphabet as the basis for the activities – #TeachChat rickylynne76 We have a large awards ceremony. Often, field trips. End-of-the-year talent show in auditorium… #teachchat ktyndal Wow! Sounds like I’m last woman out…we’re getting ready for state testing and Open House; then it’s all downhill from there. #TeachChat robin1365 @ReallyGoodStuff August 17th. No snow days this year! #TeachChat frugalteacher @ReallyGoodStuff my school makes it easy – they give us a big checklist deadlines so it all isn’t due at once. #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff So, I’ve been thinking about some ways to count down and get ready for the end of the year/transitions/etc. #TeachChat ktyndal @lemjames82 do you prep packets to get them ready for K then? #TeachChat lemjames82 @frugalteacher big day for you #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff That IS early! RT @frugalteacher: @ktyndal spelling bee is a great idea – use all of the words from the year. #TeachChat robin1365 @ReallyGoodStuff May22 #TeachChat mr_avery I guess it’s definitely time to start thinking about that again. Year has flown by! #teachchat frugalteacher @ktyndal spelling bee is a great idea – use all of the words from the year. #teachchat ReallyGoodStuff @mr_avery Hi there! I have students make a personal time capsule. I give each child a cake/bakery box and they use markers to decorate the outside. Inside we put pictures from over the course of the year, small projects, journals, and other classroom items unique to them. This is a fast easy way to create something for them to take home and remember the year.

I start with first day jitters and end with this…

My students get to check back on their time capsules they made at the beginning of the school year. They wrote their favorite word, letter and numbers that they know. It will be really exciting to see how much they have grown since the beginning of the year.
My students are also receiving an ice cream bar for meeting their growth on our standardized test.
