Easy First Day of School Activity for the Classroom

Play dough has many uses, including this idea by Jill, a 1st Grade Teacher in Fort Worth, TX. It’s a great, inexpensive material that makes even the littlest (and newest!) of learners feel welcome.  If you’re looking for a quick and easy first day of school activity, give this one a try!

First Day of School Activity for the Classroom

The first day of school is always so hectic for everyone. Instead of expecting children to settle down with a worksheet, I place a plastic lunch bag filled with play dough on each desk. Without one word from me, the kids know just what to do with the dough.

Such a gentle play provides a pleasant first day activity while it serves to soothes Back to School jitters. This self-directing activity also allows me a few moments to organize myself, chat with anxious parents, and take attendance. (Tip: Try working the dough into whatever activity you have planned next. If, for example, you plan on doing a “Getting to Know You” activity, have the children use the dough to represent a favorite hobby or food; if you want to launch right into reading, have the children use the dough to mold elements from a favorite book or story, etc.)
