The end of the school year can be bittersweet. While you (and your students!) are excited that summer vacation is just around the corner, it can be sad to see a good class move on to their next journey. Shernice, a 3rd/4th Grade Teacher from Los Angeles, California understands the importance of celebrating the year. Her photo and video ideas have been hits with her students for years and remain a keepsake for parents as their children get older. Here is how one veteran teacher honors a year well spent with an end of the year activity that’s captured in pictures.
End of the Year Activity: Honoring a Year Well Spent with Pictures
I have always enjoyed having students of different age groups participate in end- of-the- year reflections. I invite students to sort and categorize photos I’ve taken throughout the year, including photos of field trips, projects, plays, books, etc. To help with this walk down Memory Lane, I ask them to write and illustrate class books based on their categories of choice. At our end-of-year celebration, we share our books with parents.
I have my older students use video software and design programs to create “Proudest Moment Presentations” showcasing their favorite field trip, book, memory, friend, project, etc. They then present their results to each other and to parents.
Both projects are engaging ways for students to continue building skills as they appreciate and reflect upon their year of accomplishments.
