After 20 years in 1st I’m moving to Kindergarten. All you awesome Kindergarten teachers, what is your best advice in order to be prepared?
Patti says
Moving to a steam school and changing grades from 8th to 6th. Going to be teaching math, science, and art.

To amelliam: You will have an advantage knowing where you will want the children to be academically n order to be ready for first grade! I taught K for 19 years and first grade the last two years. I am excited to be going back to kindergarten for my final year of teaching! Since your students will have less experience deciphering written notes, you might want to have center labels for materials in words and pictures to help students locate and return items. I often put the same picture label on the bin, object, and also the shelf where it should be returned. (Or use colored sticky dots on plastic bins, and a matching dot for the shelf it goes. Have a short poem or song to cue students on classroom procedures, and just take a few minutes each day to listen to their stories and share a few hugs. Have fun!

What do you as a middle school teacher do for your first writing activity? I usually have the students describe their shoe with words and then sentences into a paragraph. They put one shoe in front of the room in a pile while the other shoe is sat on. They read the paragraph and if it is descriptive enough using all senses minus taste, I should be able to find it. The students love this one – especially when I smell the shoe!
