Art is not just an activity. It can be used to help reinforce concepts, and can be used as a means for assessment. For example, students learn about the water cycle. Depending on the grade level, students would draw, color, add the water cycle words to their drawing. Then using a rubric, the teacher can grade their drawings on correct vocabulary, drawing the required items – i.e. ocean, stream, rain, cloud, mountain; the use of arrows to show the directional flow of the water cycle, and then on artistic values determined by the teacher.
In Math, when the students learn about tangrams. Starting with an one inch square, the students cut out, and tape their pattern. Once the pattern is created, the students create a picture using their tangrams. This assignment would allow students to create a variety of patterns, and could be used to reinforce artistic concepts of primary colors, complementary colors, secondary colors, or choosing a color and creating tints or shades.
