Teaching is a wonderful, rewarding profession, but oftentimes teachers need to take on a second job to help pay for living and education expenses. With life so hectic during the school year, most teachers wait until the summer months to find an additional job. The ideas below are ideal for teachers who want to earn extra income during the summer and still have fun.
Ways to Earn Extra Money
1. Instructor
Are you trained in dance, aerobics, or sports? If so, seek out local summer camps, park and recreation programs, and studios to see if they are hiring for the summer months. With so many summer camps running, they are usually looking for talented, mature adults to work with children in those capacities.
2. Art or Photography Class
Start a 3 to 4-week art or photography class for children or adults in your area. Talk with the local community center about running the class through them to avoid having to collect fees, find a rental space, etc. You might also want to contact a local church to see if you can rent out a room during the week for a small fee.
3. Sell Your Curriculum Ideas
Are you a whiz at creating printables? Start an online blog and store selling your lesson plans and ideas to other teachers.
4. Administrative Temp Work
Find an online administrative/writing/design temp job on sites like upWork.com. Search jobs daily and earn extra income. You get to pick and choose which jobs you would like to apply for, so you will never be bored.
5. She’s Crafty!
If you love crafting, start an online craft/handmade store on etsy or ArtFire. Some charge monthly fees while others charge only if you sell an item. You can craft from the comfort of your own home and keep the store running after school starts.
Retail jobs, babysitting, and tutoring are other employment avenues you might want to consider. Remember to take the time to recharge at the end of the school year and use the summer to enjoy yourself. After all, you have earned it!

I prefer not to work at all in the summer!! It’s my time to refresh, relax and just enjoy being a mom! 🙂

I do have a summer job doing a two week intensive Junior Leadership Academy which is geared for 10-13 years olds and is a drug and alcohol diversion program.

Thank you for the great ideas. I work at a summer camp for 4 weeks in the summer, but I am considering looking for additional ways to earn summer cash. You have inspired me to continue doing so.

I will find out this summer about making it through without additional income. I have either worked or ‘collected rent’ before and this summer, I need to go into the break with $5k…I am hoping for a really amazing tax return to supplement my savings!

Love the outdoors? Many National Parks often need people to work. What a great way to spend your summer, hiking on your days off and working in the various stores or campgrounds. I met severalteachers last year at Yellowstone and Glacier Parks.
