7 Ways to Practice Sight Words (cont.)
4. Pipe Cleaners
If your students are fond of manipulating materials, pipe cleaners are a great tool. Using colored pipe cleaners, have students spell out their sight words by bending and twisting the material. Tip: Be aware of students that may have trouble manipulating the pipe cleaners in this way and offer an alternate activity.
5. See It, Spell It
Hands-on activities are not only more fun, they are a great way to help cement learning for students. Using your Dolch Phrase Cards, ask students to spell their word on the card itself using foam letters. They should point to the word, say it, spell it aloud, say it again, spell it aloud as they place the letters on the card, and say the word again. The more senses they can engage as they practice the word, the more likely they are to retain it.
6. Copy Me!
Kids love dry erase boards and lined boards are perfect for sight word practice. Write the word you would like your child to practice on the dry erase board, have them copy it, and then, if you would like, have them use the magnetic letters to spell the word next to it. It is easy to differentiate this activity based on each child’s individual needs.
7. Shaving Cream
Place the sight words your students are working on in a small tabletop pocket chart. On a cookie sheet or plastic plate in front of the pocket chart, place a generous dollop of shaving cream. Have students practice writing their words in the shaving cream for some hands-on, messy fun.
