Multiplication. For some students it is one of the most difficult things to master. While some teachers rely heavily on drills and others promote other methods of learning the facts, there is something to be said for activities that connect the learning of facts with hands-on activities. Multiplication houses are one way to incorporate that hands-on activity while reinforcing the facts and creating an easy, independent math center.
Classroom Craft: Multiplication House Math Craft
Grades: 3-5
Time: 15-20 minutes
Materials:
- 2 pieces of construction paper per house
- Markers
- Scissors
- Stapler
Directions:
- Choose a fact family from 1-12 to work with.
- On one of the pieces of construction paper, draw a large house that takes up the entire page. Draw 13 windows on the house and a door.
- On the door, write “Home of the ___ Family” filling in the blank with the fact family that has been selected.
- Label the windows 0-12.
- Cut out both sides and the bottom of each window to create a flap that lifts up.
- Staple the second sheet of construction paper to the back of the house.
- Lift the flap for each number and write the answer to the multiplication problem in the window.
- Finish decorating the house and you are done!
