Science fills kids with wonder and excitement about the world around them. What is a rainbow? How does a caterpillar change into a butterfly? The end of the school year is the perfect time to break out those last minute science experiments and activities that will leave your students thirsting for more exploration over the summer months. While the three activities below can be done at any time of the year for fun or review, they are especially perfect for winding down the school year. Check them out!
Last Minute Science Activities for the End of the Year
1. Science Jeopardy
Kids love jeopardy-style games and science lends itself perfectly to such an activity. Choose topics that you have covered throughout the year to craft answers to the questions that students will need to ask in order to earn points. Have them work in pairs or individually if the class is small. It is a great review of the year’s information as the students prepare to leave for summer vacation.
Tip: Laminate the pieces of the game and store them in a separate “End of the Year Activities” folder so that you will have it ready for next year’s class.
2. Color Hunt
Using free paint chips from the paint department of your local home improvement store, pair students up in teams to seek out the colors on the card on the playground. The group that finds the most colors naturally appearing in their surroundings wins. You can keep the paint strips whole, or cut them up and place a variety of different colors in a small bag for each group. Students will need to keep track of what they found the color on and where it was located on the playground, so be sure to have a small clipboard and pencil for each group ready to go.
3. Secret Messages
Try this fun, easy and inexpensive science experiment to get your students talking about molecules and more!
