5 Winter Exercise Ideas
Do you live in an apartment building? If so, walking the stairs can be a great way to tone your legs and raise your heart rate. While it may be tempting to pop on some music and trek up and down the stairs by yourself, it is safer to do it with a friend or neighbor.
Strap on some snowshoes and get walking. There is nothing like the cold, crisp air to invigorate your senses and get your blood pumping. Before heading out, make sure you are dressed warmly and have a cell phone handy. Snowshoeing around a local park is also a great way to get your kids involved in a fun, winter exercise.
Indoor Lap Pool
Take advantage of the community swim time that your local high school pool offers. While you may have to pay a small fee, the ability to swim laps in a nearby pool during the winter months can make a world of difference in your motivation to exercise. If you belong to a health club, take advantage of their indoor pool to swim laps. Swimming is especially good if you have issues with joint pain.
Walking Groups in the Mall
Most malls have some sort of walking group. They usually meet in the mornings before the mall opens. If a weekday group does not fit into your schedule, check to see if there are any weekend morning programs. If not, think about starting one with your fellow teachers from school. It will be a great way to socialize outside of school and still get some exercise into your day.
Fitness Shows and DVDs
Scan your local television listings for exercise programs throughout the day. You can record shows that you would like do and play them back when you are available to exercise. Exercise DVDs from the local library are also a good choice, because the need to return them every week will keep your exercise routine fresh. Exercising at home has always been a popular option, and during the winter months, it is an especially good way to stay safe and warm while also getting a great workout.
