8 Tips for Taking the Praxis® cont.
5. Make Notecards
Making notecards or other study tools can help you focus on the information in a way that makes it easy to remember. By reading, writing, and then orally practicing the questions, you involve multiple senses which helps when it comes to retaining information.
6. Know The Passing Scores
Knowing what score you need to get can be a great way to alleviate some of the stress associated with the test. “Know what scores you need. They are not bad, but knowing what you need to score helps. Take your time [and] pace yourself,” advised teacher Kimberley. Teacher Stephanie agreed, “Know the score you need. You may be surprised. Some of the scores are much easier than in other states.”
7. Be Strategic About When You Take Them
While most teachers sit for their exams during their time in undergraduate training, others do not take them until later on in their careers and it is then often out of necessity. Colorado teacher, Danielle, advised to be strategic when it comes to scheduling and taking the exams. “Take them early so that you can go back and retake them if you need to do so. Just breathe and do it; they’re really not so terrible,” she said.
8. Don’t Worry
Perhaps the best advice is to not worry about passing the exam. Veteran elementary teacher Jenell gives this advice, “Please don’t be apprehensive about taking the Praxis®. As long as you are confident in your abilities, you will do great. I listened to so many people who had negative experiences, but in the end I sat for both tests and passed them both in one shot. There are numerous resources that you can purchase that will help you prepare for it. Happy Testing!”
