Figuring out how to start a student book club can be a time consuming task. You want it to be just the right mix of fun and learning, but achieving that isn’t always easy. So, who better to learn the ins and outs of book club formation from than other teachers?!
Mrs. Jaw, a Really Good Teacher, sent us the following question about starting a student book club in her school.
I am interested in starting a lunch bag book club with students and need ideas on how to proceed. Does anyone have any ideas?
Mrs. Urka, a Really Good Teacher from Ludington, MI, replied with an idea that we thought was absolutely wonderful.
She said, “I read aloud to students, using a text with a higher reading level than they were capable of reading independently. Our discussions helped increase comprehension and allowed them to earn some Accelerated Reader points.
A teacher volunteered her room, children brought their lunches, and I read. We started meeting a few days a week, but they soon wanted to come everyday!”
What a great way to get children excited about reading, Mrs. Urka! Thanks for sharing your ideas. Do you have suggestions on how to start or run a book club? Share them with us in the comments below!

This is a great idea! I think it’s great that students still enjoy being read to during the day! And it’s also a good thing that you can take a non instructional part of the day, i.e. lunch, and turn it into a period where students are interacting with books! I think that all schools should have some form of a book club!
